Hikers Find Gashed Man Beneath Cliffs

How did a man wind up at the bottom of a gorge?

An autopsy is scheduled on the body of a man found lying beneath steep cliffs by hikers in Scranton.

Lackawanna County officials say the body of 48-year-old William Raymond Guziewicz was found Wednesday afternoon in the city's Roaring Brook section. Three people were hiking down a rocky path when they spotted the body on a rock on the opposite side of a gorge.

After finding him unresponsive, they called 911. Police say Guziewicz had a large gash on his head and brush burns on his arms and back. Crews conducted a vertical rope rescue to remove the body.

Acting Scranton Police Chief Carl Graziano says the death is still under investigation, but there appears to be no sign of foul play.

An autopsy is scheduled Friday. No word on when the results of the autopsy will be announced.
