FRY-day in Philly: It's a Record

Philly hits 103 degrees, breaks the record

The intense heat wave that’s been baking the Midwest is spreading across the Northeast.

And it's only getting hotter. On Thursday, the thermometer hit 98 degrees. NBC10 meteorologist Dave Warren says just after 2 p.m. Friday, we hit 100 degrees (but it feels like 114) tying a record set back in 1957.

We would wind up getting up to 103 degrees in the city and places like Reading saw temps up to 106.

It's the hottest day of the year and broke a 54-year-old record.

Dave says we’ll be baking in the heat until the end of the weekend with a high temp of 99 on Saturday and 93 on Sunday. That means a couple more days of oppressive heat. Can PECO handle it?

One PECO employee tells NBC Philadelphia that yesterday we beat the all-time peak in energy used and today, it's a strong possibility that we'll top that!

Atlantic City Electric is urging customers to conserve energy wherever possible. According to the power company, while the power supply is expected to be sufficient to meet the high demand, the extreme heat can also stress electric system equipment.

Here's a few tips on how to save some energy:

  • Set your AC on 78 and use an electric fan.
  • Keep window shades, blinds, drapes closed
  • Limit the use of electrically heated water and turn off appliances you're not using.
  • Limit opening fridge and freezers doors
  • Don't use your electric stove, washers, dryers and dishwashers until evening.
