Severe Storms Roll In, Temps Drop

Strong storms bring down record temperatures across the area

Big storms rumbled through Thursday night, bringing much-needed heat relief after records were broken across the region. In some places, temperatures dropped 20 degrees in an hour.

Thursday’s temperatures soared to 99 in Philadelphia and 102 degrees at Atlantic City’s airport. It’s the hottest early season since 1925.

Many schools tried to keep a step ahead of the heat by calling for early dismissals Wednesday and Thursday, including Philly public and parochial schools.

Humidity increased as well, pushing the heat index to well over 100 in some areas.

On Friday, expect more hot and humid weather, but it won't be nearly as bad as earlier in the week.

Everyone should plan on keeping cool by taking it easy when outside and finding shade whenever possible or just stay inside in the air conditioning.

The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging's "Heatline" (215.765.9040) remains open. The hotline connects the elderly in need to health professionals during heat events,

It is also is a good idea for residents to keep an eye on older neighbors and loved ones during extreme heat.
