Bucks County Half-Marathoner's Death Stems From Heat Stroke: Coroner

Authorities say heat stroke complications killed a runner who collapsed during a half-marathon in suburban Philadelphia earlier this month.

The Lehigh County coroner's office said 23-year-old John McMordie of Perkasie was taking part in the half-marathon Aug. 21 in East Greenville, Montgomery County.

Officials said he collapsed shortly before 10 a.m. during the 13.1-mile race and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead Friday.

An autopsy performed Saturday concluded that the death was due to complications of heat stroke. The manner of death was ruled accidental.

McMordie graduated from Pennridge High School where he played in various bands and was studying at Stanford University, according to his obituary.

A memorial service is planned for Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Pennridge High in Perkasie. His family asked that people give blood to the American Red Cross in his memory.
