Gunshot Victim Rushing to Hospital Strikes Off-Duty Officer's Car

West Philly wreck leaves both gunshot victim and officer hospitalized

Philadelphia police say a man driving himself to the hospital after he was shot in the head crashed into an off-duty police officer's car in West Philadelphia overnight.

Police didn't immediately release the name of the victim or the officer involved in the crash at 54th and Walnut streets around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The gunshot victim appeared to have run a red light, Philadelphia police Lt. John Walker said.

Police say the 51-year-old shooting victim was in critical but stable condition. The officer was listed in stable condition with a head wound and bruises.

The man was trying to drive himself to Mercy Philadelphia Hospital after being shot in the neck, head and side along the 1400 block of N Allison Street, police said.

No word yet on a motive or suspect in the original shooting.
