Gov. Jack Markell and other officials planned to gather Friday for the groundbreaking for the final phase of the new Gordons Pond Trail.

The new trail project, combined with an existing stone trail, will result in almost three miles of improved trail connecting Gordons Pond to Herring Point.

Officials say the new trail will provide recreational opportunities and nice views of the pond, tidal marsh, ocean and dunes.

They also have said that improving the trail will protect rare plant and animal species from wayward hikers and bikers trying to negotiate what has been a primitive and mostly unmarked trail.
