Grandpop Beats Disabled Grandson Repeatedly With Bat: Police

A 68-year-old Pittsburgh grandfather and his 60-year-old live-in girlfriend have been jailed on charges they repeatedly beat the man's 25-year-old disabled grandson with a baseball bat, but were careful not to kill him so they could continue cashing his $730 monthly Social Security disability checks.

Online court records don't list attorneys for Jimmie M. Peterson or Michelle C. Thompson, who were arrested Monday on charges including aggravated assault and neglect of a dependent person.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. says the abuse has occurred since at least 2011.

Investigators say the couple acknowledged the beatings, which Peterson explained were a way of disciplining his grandson for breaking televisions, urinating in the house and stealing. Peterson has been the guardian of the alleged victim since he was 2.
