Gov. Rendell Takes Aim at NRA

Gov. Rendell went head to head Sunday against Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association (NRA), over the federal ban on assault weapons.

During the 10-minute debate on “Face the Nation”, Rendell called for stronger gun-control laws since assault weapons “are used for only one reason…to kill and maim people.”

LaPierre fought back against the “phony issue” and argued for stronger enforcement of current laws, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The two also disagreed over what constitutes an assault weapon versus other guns.

There is “no functional difference at all”, according to LaPierre.

“The assault weapons that are used that are sold in sporting goods stores now because the ban has been lifted, they put out a tremendously high amount of fire,” Rendell countered.

More and more people are loading up on guns and ammunition fearing President Obama will reinstate the federal assault-weapons ban, which expired in 2004, the paper reported

However, with the many challenges the Obama administration currently faces, the assault weapons ban has not yet been made a priority, Senior White House advisor David Axelrod said on the program.
