Boy in Custody After School Fight: Cops

Police say both teens involved in the fight were part of a program for emotionally disturbed students

Police are investigating an alleged assault at a Philadelphia school.

It happened Wednesday morning in the basement of Simon Gratz High School in Hunting Park. Police say a 17-year-old boy elbowed a female student in the stomach during a fight. The girl was taken to the hospital as a precaution and had no major injuries, according to officials with the Mastery Charter Schools, which run a program out of Gratz.

Both teens involved in the scuffle are part of the specialized Mastery program for emotionally disturbed students that takes place in the basement of Gratz, according to the School District.

Authorities say a program administrator, a woman in her 30s, fell to the ground while trying to break up the fight. The woman was not seriously hurt and returned to work, according to Mastery.

"The altercation today between students in our Regional Program today was handled quickly, appropriately and decisively by our program staff," Mastery Charter Schools CEO Scott Gordon said. "The incident is completely unrelated to Simon Gratz High School or its students. Mastery Gratz students in the building continue to be focused on learning and being engaged in their classes."

No word yet on any charges against the 17-year-old boy.
