Local Student Charged with Ex-Girlfriend's Murder

Pair had previously been in one-year relationship

The lifeless body of Emily Rachel Silverstein was found early Thursday morning in the Gettysburg College apartment of her ex-boyfriend, Kevin Robert Schaeffer, who stands accused of stabbing and strangling her to death

Kevin Robert Schaeffer, 21, was charged Thursday in the slaying of Emily Rachel Silverstein, 19, inside Schaeffer's university-leased apartment, police said.

Police believe the incident happened between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

Silverstein was unresponsive when paramedics responded a 911 call at 6:45 a.m. No word on who placed the call.

Adams County District Attorney Shawn C. Wagner described the murder as a domestic violence-related homicide.

The two had previously been in a one-year relationship.

Silverstein was a freshman from Roosevelt, N.J., about 20 miles east of Trenton.

Schaeffer is from Oley, about 10 miles east of Reading.

He faces charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, tampering with physical evidence, and possessing an instrument of crime.

There is no word yet on a possible motive.
