Allentown Gas Explosion Injures 2 Workers, 2 Residents

UGI workers were working on a gas line when the explosion happened, officials said

A gas explosion injured four people on the 200 block of North Fulton Street in Allentown at about 1 p.m. Thursday.

According to fire officials, UGI natural gas service employees were laying new gas lines at the location when the explosion happened.

Two gas workers and two residents were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions are not yet known.

Victim Keith Flowers says he and a worked found a whole in one of the pipes below Flowers' home.

“I said, man it felt like Iraq or something. It felt like that kind of an explosion,” said Flowers.

"We just heard a big boom," said neighbor Amy Vasquez. "Everything just shook...we thought it was a really bad accident."

The blast knocked off the front of the porch.

Last February, five people -- including a baby boy and teenage girl -- were killed just a few blocks away when an elderly couple's home exploded.

“I’m thankful to be alive -- I’m really very thankful to be alive tonight,” Flowers said.
