Freight Train Derailment Closes Turnpike Ramps

A U.S. Senator is calling for better rail safety after two tanker cars carrying a flammable liquid derailed from a freight train in New Jersey.

The derailment occurred early Thursday on a line off the main track in an industrial section of Carteret.

Officials closed the ramps at Interchange 12 on the New Jersey Turnpike for as a precaution while crews try to upright the tankers.

Conrail spokesman John Enright says the tankers were not compromised and are not leaking and that there were no injuries.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez says the derailment underscored the need for a safer rail network.
