Former Real Estate Agent Pleads Guilty to Mortgage Fraud

A former real estate title agent has admitted carrying out a mortgage fraud scheme in which she obtained seven loans, totaling more than $3.7 million, on two properties in northern New Jersey.

Federal prosecutors say 48-year-old Ania Nowak, of Belvidere, recently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She now faces up to 20 years in prison when she's sentenced May 5.

Nowak admitted her role in obtaining seven mortgage loans through fraudulent means.

For each of the seven loans, she lied on loan documents and failed to pay off prior mortgages at closing. She also failed to record the mortgages and any deeds.

Most of the loans went into default for non-payment.
