One of New Jersey's best-known conservative activists is entering the special U.S. Senate race.
Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan said Wednesday that he's gathering signatures and raising money for a run.
Lonegan is the New Jersey director of Americans For Prosperity and ran for governor in 2005 and 2009.
While he has not had much luck in statewide elections, Lonegan has organized New Jersey conservatives around several issues including opposition to President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.
An August primary and October election is scheduled to fill the seat of Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who died Monday.
The deadline to file papers to run is 4 p.m. Monday.
