Food Bank Works to Fill Hunger Gap as School Ends

The Food Bank of Delaware is preparing for some of its highest demand as school lets out for the summer.

The Daily Times reports the number of meals the Food Bank serves quadruples throughout the state in the summer.

The charity has a summer food service program starting Monday to help fill the loss of meals that children receive at school. It serves day care centers, churches, camps and other sites where children need food.

To qualify, at least half the children at a site must qualify for free or reduced price school lunches.

In Sussex County, the program serves about 1,500 children. Officials say the area's size and low density means children are spread out for miles when school is out, and they have to find meals elsewhere.
