Southwest Vigil Turns Violent

Police originally classified the gathering as a flash mob

A vigil for 18-year-old John Bland turned ugly Thursday night after a scuffle broke out.

About 250 juveniles met in the area of 62nd and Elmwood Streets in Southwest Philadelphia to remember Bland who accidentally shot himself Wednesday night, police said.

That scuffle grew into several fights and prompted police to mistakenly classify the incident as a flash mob, sources tell NBC Philadelphia.

Police confirm they arrested five teens after the incident.

Family members and others at the vigil are accusing officers of using excessive force.

Police say they were simply trying to control the unruly crowd.
