Fisherman Swept Away by Current

Authorities in northeastern Pennsylvania say a fisherman died after he fell in a river and was swept away.

The (Hazleton) Standard Speaker reports that the 63-year-old man was fishing with a friend in the Lehigh River in Carbon County.

Chief Bill Bresnak of Kidder Township fire department said the man fell over at about 5 p.m. Thursday, went under the surface and was swept away by a strong current.

Bresnak said the body of the Luzerne County resident, whose name was not released, was recovered about a half-mile away around 7:30 p.m.

More than 35 people were needed to pull the man's body from the water due to conditions, including a strong current and a steep hill leading from the river, Bresnak told the Standard Speaker.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
