AC's 1st Casino is Reborn

Back-from-the-dead Resorts gets new license

The nation's first casino to open outside Nevada has a new license from New Jersey regulators.

The Casino Control Commission on Wednesday granted a permanent license to the new owners of Atlantic City's Resorts Casino Hotel.

The license will be reviewed every five years. It won't need to be renewed unless there are serious problems.

Resorts opened in May 1978 as the first casino in New Jersey. There are now 11.

Resorts nearly had to close last December, but its new owners slashed the payroll and began promoting the place like crazy.

The gambling hall has adopted a Roaring `20s theme to capitalize on the popularity of HBO's “Boardwalk Empire” show.
