Firefighters Rescue Baby from Burning Minivan

Two volunteer firefighters rescued a baby trapped inside a burning minivan on the Garden State Parkway.

The Asbury Park Press says no injuries were reported in the crash, which occurred shortly after 11 a.m. Monday near exit 74 in Lacey Township. The child and its mother were the only people in the vehicle.

Authorities say Pat O'Donnell, lieutenant and president of the Beach Haven Fire Department, was southbound on the parkway when he saw smoke coming from the minivan.

Working with a firefighter from the Lanoka Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, they used fire extinguishers to bring the fire under control.

The Lanoka Harbor firefighter was then able to undo the child's car seat and get the baby out of the vehicle.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
