Authorities say a fire in a row house in southwest Philadelphia has left one person dead and several others homeless.
Officials say the blaze broke out at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday at South 57th Street in the Cobbs Creek section of the city. The blaze went to two alarms and spread to five neighboring houses before it was brought under control almost an hour later.
One elderly woman was killed, according to police. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross says it is providing financial assistance to eight people to buy food, clothing, winter coats, shoes and other necessities following the blaze. Spokesman Dave Schrader says the organization is also helping 23 people following five other fires in the city since 8 a.m. Friday.
