A fire truck crash left five firefighters hospitalized Wednesday night in Lumberton, N.J., according to authorities.

The Lumberton Volunteer Fire Department truck skidded off the road and overturned in a ditch just before 8 p.m. on Smithville Road near Route 38, officials said.

The five hurt volunteer firefighters all suffered minor injuries and were expected to be OK, officials said.

Part of Smithville Road was still closed as of 11 p.m. as officials investigated the crash.

The truck's driver was trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle on the narrow road at the time of the crash, officials said.

The force of the crash ripped off at least part of the fire truck's roof, a spokesman said.

The fire truck was returning from a call when the crash happened.

Intermittent heavy rains were pounding the area at the time of the wreck but it was unknown if weather played a role in the accident.
