Fire Tears Through Northeast Philadelphia Condo, Injuring 2, Displacing 6

Investigation Underway Into Condo Fire that Injured 2

A couple in their 70s were recovering at the hospital on Sunday after an overnight fire tore through their Northeast Philadelphia condo, leaving them injured.

Officials said six people, including two children, were displaced by the fire, which sparked shortly after midnight at the Excelsior Twin complex on Welsh Road near Masland Street, in Bustleton. The Red Cross was working to help displaced families later Sunday morning.

Residents of the condo awoke to shouting shortly after midnight as the fire tore through the building. Firefighters responded about 12:30 a.m., authorities said, and found the building nearly engulfed in flames.

The elderly couple were both taken to Aria Health - Torresdale hospital for treatment. They were in stable condition later Sunday, officials said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 1:22 a.m. The Fire Marshal investigated the cause of the fire later Sunday morning.
