Fire Inspector Killed by Amtrak Train

Decorated inspector killed by train while on duty

A decorated Wilmington, Del. fire investigator was killed by a high speed Amtrak train while on duty Monday night.

It is not yet known why the man was on the train tracks and state police say they do not suspect any foul play in the fatal accident.

Wilmington Fire Department Inspector Brian P. Waynant, 45, was struck and killed by a southbound Amtrak train 9:54 p.m. behind Meco Circle, about a mile south of Wilmington.

Waynant began his career with the Wilmington Fire Department in 2004, after working for 16 years as a Wilmington police officer, according to authorities. He is survived by his wife, Cheri, and their children, a son and a daughter.

“I would ask everyone to remember his family during this very difficult time as we recognize and remember his valuable service to the citizens of Wilmington,” said Mayor Baker this morning on behalf of all of the City of Wilmington, his friends and colleagues.
