Fire Destroys Log House at Educational Site

Fire has destroyed a log house at a unique educational site where gnomes are used to help teach lessons about forest ecology.

The Lancaster Online website reported Wednesday that the 220-year-old house on the site of a Lancaster County attraction called Gnome Countryside was destroyed in the blaze.

Authorities said no one was home during the early Tuesday morning fire and no injuries were reported. They said the cause could not be determined because of the extensive damage.

Richard Humphreys, a retired teacher who owns the house with his wife, is nicknamed "Gnomeman" and has placed gnomes throughout the 14-acre property as part of his storytelling and presentations on ecology, zoology and related topics.
