Feeling Frigid: Wind Chills Drop Into Dangerous Territory

Strong, persistent winds are producing subzero wind chills that will cut to your core and are dangerous for anyone venturing outside.

NBC10 First Alert Weather has issued a First Alert lasting through Friday due to the extremely cold. The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Advisory lasting through 11 a.m. Friday for the entire region.

Late Thursday temperatures plummeted to record lows in some areas as winds blew between 15 and 25 mph with gusts around 30 mph.

The combination produced "feel-like" temperatures around negative 20 degrees, Meteorologist Bill Henley said. Wind chills dropped to negative 32 degrees Friday morning on Mount Pocono.

In Philadelphia, that was cut in half with feel-like temperatures at negative 14 degrees. Atlantic City hovered near negative 20 degrees.

Such intense conditions poses a physical danger to anyone spending a prolonged amount of time outside including concerns about frostbite and hypothermia. Health experts recommend covering exposed skin including your nose, fingers and ears and staying indoors as much as possible.

The Arctic weather could be the coldest temperatures our area has felt in 21 years, meteorologists say.
