Fatal Fire in Mays Landing

Investigators believe blaze was accidental

A 44-year-old man has died after an apartment fire in Mays Landing early Sunday morning.

The fire broke out in a second-floor unit in the Sandpiper Apartments on Route 40 at around 2:30 a.m. When firefighters entered the rooms, they found Robert Turchi unconscious in a rear bedroom.

The was contained to Turchi's apartment and was quickly put out. Turchi was taken to AtlantiCare Medical Center Mainland Division, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the fire is not known, but police believe it is accidental.
