Fake 911 Operators Calling Residents

Officials say scammers may be phishing for personal information

Officials in Berks County are warning residents of a new 911 scam that's targeting people as they sleep.

Scammers are calling homes in the middle of the night, posing as emergency operators and asking personal questions.

"[The callers] are alleging numerous calls have been received at the 911 center from the residence and then the caller is asking the receiving party questions of a personal nature," Berks County emergency official Brian A. Gottschall said.

At least three residents in Bern, Cumru and Union Townships have come forward saying they've received calls.

The scammers have asked questions about whether they're living alone, have a security system and if so, what company services it, officials say.

"Those are types of information that the 911 center will have no interest in or need to know," Gottschall said.

He says the scammers are probably trying to determine whether the home would be a good candidate for a burglary or home invasion.

Officials warn residents to be extra cautious and skeptical of such calls. They warn to hang up the phone and call authorities if you are contacted.
