FEMA Begins Reviewing Sandy Flood Insurance Claims

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say they have begun reviewing flood insurance claims of Superstorm Sandy victims.

FEMA said Friday in a statement the agency started mailing letters to about 142,000 National Flood Insurance Protection policyholders.

The development comes after FEMA announced their plans to set up a process for review in March.

Storm victims have said some insurance companies unfairly assessed damage after the Oct 2012 storm that killed 71 people in New Jersey.

FEMA Deputy Associate Administrator Brad Kieserman says the issues are a "great concern" and the agency wants to help policyholders recover in a fair way.

The review was announced after New Jersey Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer met with FEMA administrator Craig Fugate in March.
