Exploding Manholes Rock A.C.

Utility crews were making repairs after three manhole explosions rocked downtown Atlantic City
Wednesday.

White smoke rose at least 10 feet across from Boardwalk Hall after the 6:30 a.m. blasts.

Emergency units left the scene and a two-block section of Pacific Avenue was closed to traffic.

Fire Chief Dennis Brooks tells The Press of Atlantic City one of the explosions caused a portion of the sidewalk to cave in between Mississippi and Georgia Avenues.

A second explosion happened at one location around 11 a.m. but it was quickly extinguished.

There were no reports of injuries.

The fire chief says utility crews are pumping out a significant amount of water. Brooks says explosions tend to occur when water seeps into the area surrounding electrical lines.

The exact cause of the morning blasts was not immediately clear.
