Tips for Dealing With Excessive Heat

Excessive heat warning issued for the entire area until Wednesday night

With the mercury possibly breaking 100 this week it's time for people all over the Delaware Valley to take precautions to beat the heat.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the tri-state area from noon Monday until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Record heat, combined with increasing humidity Tuesday and Wednesday will result in heat index values reaching or exceeding 100 degrees for a few hours.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

Remember to drink plenty of water, make sure air-conditioners and fans work, stay out of the sun and check up on older friends, relatives and neighbors. Plus use the hot weather tips -- care of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging:

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Wear lightweight clothing
  • Drink plenty of liquids
  • Bathe in water near skin temperature
  • Check on elderly and pets

The heat hotline will begin also begin at noon and will remain open until midnight. It will reopen on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Call 215-765-9040 for recommended air-conditioned locations, tips on staying cool and signs of heat stress.
