Ex-Tenant Charged With Killing Del. Couple

Police say man tried to pawn a victim's ring

A former tenant is charged in the murders of an elderly man and his wife in Sussex County.

Michael Emory, 32, is accused of killing Harvey Cashwell, 76, and his wife Carolyn, 66, inside their Greenwood, Del. home.

Police say Emory was being held without bail on two murder counts, a burglary charge, theft of more than $1,500 and weapons charges.

Here is what police told the media Friday about the case. On Thursday (April 26) at 5:30 p.m., troopers were called to a home on the 28000 block of Liden School Road in Greenwood. Neighbors told police they had not seen the couple who lived inside the home since the previous Sunday.

Troopers went inside the house where they found the bodies of the Cashwells.

Both victims were removed from the scene and turned over to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy that revealed that they were killed. Details of the medical examiner's findings weren't released as Delaware State Police detectives continued to investigate the deaths Friday afternoon.

On Friday, Emory was taken into custody at the Greenwood Inn and charged with theft by false pretense after allegedly pawning a ring belonging to Carolyn Cashwell.

On Tuesday, Emory was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the Cashwells.

According to court records obtained by the AP, Emory was evicted from a residence he rented from the Cashwells in July after the couple filed a lawsuit against him.
