Ex-Homeless Man Punished for Good Deed Receives Outpouring of Support

A formerly homeless northern New Jersey man is seeing an outpouring of public support after his plight touched readers across the nation.

James Brady had his benefits cut off after the Human Services Department said he had failed to report as income $850 he found in April on a Hackensack sidewalk and turned over to police.

Brady, who was homeless at the time, was granted the sum after no one contacted police during the required waiting period.

He was recently notified that his benefits were being cut off because he failed to report the money as income.

The Record reports that offers of support for Brady have been pouring in from readers.

Bergen County's United Way has set up an account specifically for Brady through its Compassion Fund.
