Engine Trouble Brings Down Banner Plane

A Jersey Shore banner plane pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in a marsh after his single engine plane started smoking.

Dave Masterson told NBC Philadelphia he chose to put the plane down in a muddy area near Pierces Point Road and the King Nummy Campground in Middle Township, N.J. after losing power.

"I had just picked up a banner and was heading up to A.C. when it happened," Masterson said. "So I turned around and started heading back to the field to land, but I couldn't make it so I put it down in the marsh."

Witnesses watched as a helicopter came to pluck the unhurt pilot out of the mud.

The plane, which is operated by Paramount Air Service, is the second to make an emergency landing this summer.

A similar plane was ditched in an Ocean City, N.J. marsh back on June 4. In that incident the pilot said the engine began to sputter.

Officials from the FAA and Paramount Air say they're investigating.
