Engaged Jail Guards Face Charges in Inmate Beating

Authorities have identified two New Jersey jail officers -- who are engaged to be married to each other -- charged in the beating of an inmate.

Mercer County prosecutors say Isaac Wood III punched inmate Rafael Jardines in the face at the Mercer County Correction Center earlier this month, then repeatedly kicked Jardines in the head and body. Jardines was taken to a hospital.

Prosecutors say Trachell Syphax saw the attack and did nothing to stop it, and that both then filed false police reports about the incident.

A preliminary investigation determined the attack was unprovoked.

Wood, of Ewing, is charged with official misconduct and aggravated assault. Syphax, of Trenton, is charged with official misconduct.

Both have been suspended without pay.

It wasn't immediately known if they have attorneys.
