This Boy Scout of America really put the “America” into his latest service project.
Eight years in the making, Edward Caleo is completing his Eagle Scout Project, a 9/11 Memorial he and his troop built in Ridley Park, just outside Philadelphia in Delaware County. This project, along with countless service hours and volunteer work, allows Edward to achieve the highest rank given in the Boy Scouts of America.
With the help of his troop, local businesses and authorities, Edward’s idea for a 9/11 Memorial became a reality. The memorial consists of bricks laid for each victim of the September 11th attacks, with two paths making the shape of a peace sign.
In addition, two steel beams were crafted into the shape of the Twin Towers, finished with a coat of red, white, and blue. The beams will stand atop a base resembling the Pentagon, and the American flag serves as the cherry on top, draped over the monuments.
The "Spirit of America Park," found within Ridley Park, was given its first 9/11 Memorial back in 2001. Construction was overseen by Mayor Hank Eberle, and built by members of the community. Now, 17 years later, Caleo has rebuilt and restored the original monument along with the construction of his own.
The unveiling ceremony takes place Saturday, Sept. 15 at 27-45 W. Sellers Ave.
