Library Drop-Box Kitten Dies

Kitten found shoved into a library drop box died of its injuries a week later

The tiny kitten that was found in a library book drop box last Friday succumbed to its injuries at the Montgomery County SPCA Wednesday night.

The 6-week-old blue-eyed kitten was being treated at the Conshohocken shelter after library staffers rescued the striped male tabby, which someone shoved into the “returns” slot at the La Mott Community Center in Cheltenham Township sometime after closing at 9 p.m. Thursday July 22.

A maintenance man found the kitten at 7:30 a.m. Friday when he heard mewing coming from the drop box.

SPCA director Carmen Ronio says the 15-ounce cat was being treated for dehydration, diarrhea and an eye infection. Ronio initially put the kitten's chances of survival at 70 percent.

"I am very down as well as our entire staff.. we did our very best. We were hopeful for a happy ending, but the cards were stacked against him," Carmen Ronio told the Inquirer.

Ronio says someone would have had to put the kitten into the drop box deliberately, and officials are seeking the person responsible.
