A driver, trapped for hours in a box truck cab partially dangling from a highway overpass, had his leg partially amputated following a crash Tuesday on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
The truck driver was traveling in the southbound lanes of the toll road near Route 363 in Lansdale, Montgomery County late in the afternoon when his vehicle somehow overturned, investigators say. The truck slid on the drivers side across the two-lane highway and through a bridge wall.
The impact left the driver's leg pinned beneath the steering column, officials said. Rescue crews spent more than two hours working to free the man, but were forced to resort to amputation.
The man was taken to Abington Memorial Trauma Center for treatment. Officials have not yet revealed his condition or identity.
Southbound lanes were shut down at the location of the crash for several hours stranding drivers on the limited-access road. Lanes were later reopened as crews towed the truck away.
