Driver Sentenced to 19 Years in Fatal Hit-and-Run

A driver convicted in a deadly hit-and-run accident in northern New Jersey has been sentenced to 19 years in state prison.

The Record reports that 44-year-old Jason Askew continued to maintain his innocence before the sentence was imposed Friday.

Passaic County prosecutors say Askew was driving the sport utility vehicle that struck and killed two men in March 2012 as they walked along Route 46 eastbound in Clifton. He was convicted of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, endangering an injured victim, hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence.

When initially questioned about the accident a few weeks after it happened, Askew told investigators that his vehicle had been damaged when he struck a deer on Route 19.
