Driver Dies in Crash on Closed Philly Bridge

The Platt Bridge was closed in both directions after fatal accident until just before 8 a.m. Monday.

Officials say a motorist ignored bridge closure signs, leading to a fatal crash that also injured at least two construction workers.

Authorities say the vehicle struck maintenance equipment around 1:30 a.m. Monday on the Platt Bridge in South Philadelphia.

The 32-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene and at least two people working on the bridge were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The bridge was closed for repairs at the time of the crash and remained closed until 7:45 a.m. as investigators worked to determine why the driver tried to cross the bridge.
