Dozens Displaced in Apartment Fire

Dozens of people have been displaced after a fire broke out in a building of a northeastern Pennsylvania apartment complex.

Authorities said the fire started around 8 a.m. Friday and gutted a ground-floor bedroom at the Summit Garden Apartments in Carbondale, Lackawanna County.

Carbondale Fire Chief Chris Pezak told The Times-Tribune that the state police fire marshal determined the fire started when a 6-year-old was playing with a lighter.

Pezak said at least 18 apartments were damaged. Firefighters estimate that between 40 and 70 people are affected.

Firefighters said no one was injured but an 84-year-old woman had to be rescued from her second-story window.

Pezak said the fire-damaged building will be closed until further notice due to smoke and water damage.
