Division of Alcohol & Tobacco Enforcement Agent Busts Tobacco Smuggler: Police

A man was arrested after Delaware State Police found a large amount of cigarettes in the car he was driving when they pulled him over for speeding last Wednesday.

Mugahid Tahir Al Ghazali, 25, of New York was driving a rental car north on SR 1 just south of Odessa when police stopped him for speeding. During the traffic stop, the trooper discovered 394 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, according to investigators.

State Police contacted the Delaware Division of Alcohol & Tobacco Enforcement (DATE) who confirmed the cartons were obtained in Virginia and took the man into custody.

He was charged with possession of untaxed cigarettes and attempting to evade Delaware excise tax.

His rental car was confiscated as well, police said.

Al Ghazali was released from custody after posting $5,500 cash bail.
