Disgraced Fmr. Pa. Judge Goes to Court

convicted of racketeering in a scheme involving private juvenile detention centers.

A hearing is set for June over the pension for a former Pennsylvania judge convicted of racketeering in a scheme involving private juvenile detention centers.

The State Employees' Retirement System in 2009 denied former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella and another judge their pensions because of their involvement in an alleged $2.5 million kickback scheme.

That decision came after Ciavarella and former Judge Michael Conahan agreed to plead guilty in the case. But a judge rejected those pleas and a federal jury convicted Ciavarella of charges including racketeering and conspiracy in February.

Ciavarella's attorney tells the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader a claim against the ex-judge's pension contributions has been undercut by the jury's finding that he took kickbacks but did not incarcerate juveniles for financial gain.

Conahan's challenge is pending.
