Democrats to Confront Endorsement in Governor Race

Democratic Party candidates will go into the crowded gubernatorial primary campaign without an official endorsement.

Party committee members were splintered among five candidates Saturday during two rounds of voting at their winter meeting. State Treasurer Rob McCord received the most votes in both rounds, but fell short of the two-thirds majority necessary to win an endorsement.

Before the vote, McCord acknowledged that he didn't expect to win a two-thirds vote. But he still pushed for a vote over protests by the campaign of U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz and says he hopes to at least parlay his showing into campaign volunteers.

Democrats view Gov. Tom Corbett as the nation's least popular Republican governor and have made him a top target in this year's election.  The primary election is May 20.
