Delaware officials are cracking down on dogs running freely without a leash in Dover.
Dover City Council members last week passed an ordinance that makes it illegal for anyone to allow their unleashed dog to run at-large within city limits.
The change brings city law into accordance with the state's code. It requires all dogs to be licensed and leashed at all times.
Those in violation of the new law could face a fine of at least $50. Loose dogs may be impounded or, in the case of a particularly vicious dog that attacks a police officer or animal control officer, could be killed.
The city would be required to notify owners of impounded dogs through written communication or with public notices.
