$50M Del. Police Headquarters Needs $10M More For Upgrades

New Castle County Executive Tom Gordon is proposing up to $10 million in repairs to the county's police headquarters, which opened six years ago.

The News Journal reports that architect Philip Conte told the county council on Tuesday that the $50 million building has significant electrical and air conditioning problems and the parking lot routinely floods.

Jeff Miller, the county's emergency communications chief, says air conditioning problems led to a recent near catastrophic failure of 911 communications. The county has already spent about $400,000 to try to fix the problem and another $1 million has been allocated.

Other problems include an area meant to be used to drop off and pick up prisoners. Conte says the design is badly flawed and he's not sure it has ever been used.
