Del. Man Charged With Beating Store Clerk With Bat

An 18-year-old man is charged with beating a Newark tobacco store clerk with an aluminum bat after he was told the business was closing for the night.

Delaware State Police say the Marshall Demby II of Newark went to the store Friday night to buy a watch. The 33-year-old store clerk said he needed to close the store early. Police say Demby became angry.

As the clerk began closing the store, he was struck in the back of the head with an aluminum bat. When he turned around, he was struck again and fell down.

The clerk pulled out a knife and tried to hold Demby until police arrived. But Demby struggled and fled. Demby later turned himself in and is charged with assault and weapons offenses.

The store clerk was treated for a broken arm and head injuries.
