Del. Health Insurance Enrollment Deadline Arrives

Delaware health officials are seeing a "tremendous uptick" in activity as the deadline arrives for coverage under the federal health reform law starting Jan. 1.

Jill Fredel, spokeswoman for the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, said Tuesday that officials don't have a tally of enrollments yet, but there was a big rush as Monday's deadline approached. She says guides and navigators scheduled meetings over the weekend as part of an enrollment blitz.

The federal government allowed for a one-day grace period to compensate for heavy demand on HealthCare.gov. Fredel says she tried logging on and found it over capacity, so the grace period probably helped.

State officials have said they hope to enroll 35,000 Delawareans in the exchange, but they reported fewer than 800 paid enrollments last week.
