Girl, 4, Dies in ‘Chaotic' Camden House Fire

10 people, including 5 children hurt in deadly row home blaze

A 4-year-old girl died in a "chaotic" row home fire in Camden, New Jersey overnight, family members confirmed.

Flames tore through the house on Morton Street near Louis Street just after midnight Saturday.

The girl -- identified by family members as Layannie "Taco" Williams -- died in the fire. Five other children and five adults in the home were able to escape the flames and smoke but did suffer injuries that required treatment at Cooper University Hospital, Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen.

Family members and witnesses said that residents threw children from a second-floor window to help them escape.

"It was chaotic when the companies arrived," Camden Fire Chief Michael Harper said.

The American Red Cross assisted eleven people from four families displaced by the fire.

"Our hearts are with the families as they cope with this devastating loss," American Red Cross New Jersey Region CEO Ana Montero said. "Our compassionate volunteers provided assistance to the families this morning and will remain available for support and counseling needs."

The home had working smoke detectors.

No word yet on what caused the deadly blaze but Harper said there is no reason to suspect anything suspicious.
