Darby Man Drives Over, Kills Mom: Police

Man had a history of odd behavior in Darby, officials say.

A Darby man has been charged with murder after allegedly running over his elderly mother with a van several times on a rural road in Maryland.

The Worcester County Bureau of Investigation says 58-year-old Steven Frederick Molin of Darby, Pa., has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and manslaughter.

Authorities say Molin ran over his 85-year-old mother, Emily Belle Molin, with a large work van on Carey Road in Berlin on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, when word got back to Darby residents few were surprised by the news.

"He's a f------ nut. Crazy, certified," Paula Brown, the former Darby mayor, told the Daily News.

Molin has a strange history in Darby, which includes burning down a dentist’s office where he was working as a handyman and spending $90 on a campaign to unseat a Darby Borough district justice in 2001, according to the Daily News.

"He's been a mentally deranged person for years," said Brown. "[Emily] was the sweetest person. She never uttered a bad word to anyone. He was very controlling of her," she told the Daily News.

On Tuesday, Molin called police about midnight to report a car accident and told investigators that his mother fell out of the car while he was driving.

Police say Molin told officials that after his mother fell out, he stopped and backed up. Accident reconstruction specialists could tell the woman had been driven over two to three times, police say.

Despite his past actions, one Darby official doesn’t think Molin was capable of killing his mother.

"He was a pain in the ass, but he wasn't a violent pain in the ass," Darby Police Chief Bob Smythe told the Daily News. "There are a lot of goofy things he does, but I can't imagine him murdering her.”
