Damaged Propane Line to Blame for Fatal House Explosion

A damaged propane line in a home's crawl space is being blamed for an explosion and fire that left one person dead.

It happened around 2 p.m. Monday in a home at the Lake Harmony Estates development in Kidder Township, Carbon County.

Police said Tuesday that 29-year-old Melissa Barwis was killed in the explosion and her boyfriend, 40-year-old Bruce Barberio, is recovering at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Authorities said the two were caretakers of the house and the homeowners live elsewhere.

Fire officials believe that the explosion was likely sparked by an electrical appliance in the home.

A third person suffered back injuries from trying to help get Barberio out of the building.
